food news

East Boston’s favorite bougie bodega, EBO Grocery (110 Meridian St, Boston, MA 02128), debuted a summer makeover this week, including a new schedule (open now closed Mondays + Tuesdays) and slimmed-down selections. The store is focusing on a seasonal in-store experience. Think: lobster roll kits, sunscreen, and a curated summer wine selection best for hot days (and nights). Plus, they’ll still carry caviar, oysters, + the accouterments that go with them.

P.S. If you’re new to oysters or want a fun way to spend a sunset this summer, don’t skip Shucking oysters by Boston Harbor with EBO Oysters + EBO Grocery-owner Alex Cervasio. Tickets are $65 and include a hands-on workshop on how to shuck oysters right on a dock in East Boston, fresh oysters, and a shucking knife you’ll get to take home. Classes are reoccurring.

A new third space for women’s sports fans is coming to Boston. If you want to know where to watch women’s sports in Boston, you’ll soon have a home. Portland, Oregon-based The Sports Bra is expanding, opening locations in Boston, Las Vegas, St. Louis, and Indianapolis. Owned by eight local women’s sports fans, Boston’s The Sports Bra joins Jamaica Plain’s Drawdown Brewing in prioritizing women’s sports programming. (Eater Boston)

travel news

Solo flyers may have been paying more to fly. An investigation by Thrifty Traveler reveals United, Delta, and American Airlines have been charging solo flyers more (double, in some instances) than groups of two or more for one-way trips. Delta and United now say they’ve stopped the practice. (savor + roam)

Hawai’i will now be charging tourists a new fee. Beginning Jan 1, 2026, the state’s current hotel tax will rise from 10.25% to 11% to help mitigate the costs of climate-related threats and protect the island chain’s fragile ecosystems. While they were exempt from the hotel tax, cruise ship passengers will also be charged an 11% cruise tax matching the hotel fee, prorated for the number of days the ship stays in Hawai’i ports. Don’t let a surprise vet bill torpedo your budget

Routine vet checkups are rising, and some surgeries can cost as much as a holiday in Europe. Fortunately, pet insurance can help offset these unexpected costs. With some policies starting at $10 and reimbursing up to 90%, you can keep your pet healthy without sacrificing your savings.
